Common signs of ovulation, which typically occurs about 14 days before the next period in a 28-day cycle (timing varies by cycle length):
Change in cervical mucus — becomes clear, stretchy, and slippery (often compared to egg whites) in the days leading up to ovulation
Mild pelvic or lower abdominal pain on one side (mittelschmerz), lasting minutes to a couple days
Slight rise in basal body temperature (about 0.5–1°F / 0.3–0.6°C) after ovulation has occurred — this confirms ovulation happened, it doesn't predict it in advance
Increased libido
Breast tenderness
Light spotting, in some people
Heightened sense of smell or taste, reported anecdotally but less well-established
Caveats:
Basal body temperature and cervical mucus changes are the most physiologically grounded indicators; things like libido or smell are weaker signals with more individual variation.
These symptoms are not reliable for contraception or precise conception timing on their own — ovulation predictor kits (which detect the LH surge) or medical monitoring are more accurate for that purpose.
Conditions like PCOS can cause irregular or absent ovulation with atypical or absent symptoms.
