Zidovudine, also known as AZT or azidothymidine, is a prescription antiretroviral medication used to treat HIV and prevent its transmission from mother to child. It belongs to a class of drugs called Nucleoside Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitors (NRTIs) and works by blocking the enzyme that the HIV virus needs to replicate itself.
